Riyadh: The King Abdulaziz World Cultural Center (Ithra) has kicked off its much-anticipated10th annual Saudi Film Festival, slated to run from May 2nd to 9, 2024.

This milestone edition of the festival commemorates a decade of cinematic excellence, spotlighting the captivating realm of Science Fiction Cinema. Over the course of the action-packed week, attendees can immerse themselves in a staggering lineup of 76 film screenings, with 53 titles vying for 36 esteemed awards.

  • Competition and Awards:

In its landmark 10th year, the Saudi Film Festival (SFF) introduces a revamped competition framework, aimed at fostering heightened competitiveness among participants. A total of 53 meticulously curated films, spanning feature-length, short, and documentary genres, have been handpicked by the festival's technical committee to contend for 36 prestigious accolades. The competition spans three principal categories: Film Competition, Unexecuted Screenplay Competition, and the Production Market Projects Competition. Noteworthy among the accolades is the introduction of the Golden Palm Awards, recognising excellence in Saudi environmental documentary filmmaking and animated short films.

  • Engagement and Professional Development:

Beyond the cinematic showcases, the SFF offers a diverse array of professional development initiatives to enrich attendees' experiences. The festival boasts ten targeted training workshops, catering to various facets of the industry, including specialized sessions for participants in the production market and workshops on short and feature-length screenplay development. Additionally, a symposium and 13 masterclasses will delve into a wide spectrum of cinematic subjects, aimed at fostering deeper understanding and honing the skills of film professionals.

  • A Decade of Cinematic Progress:

Reflecting on its illustrious decade-long journey, the Saudi Film Festival has emerged as a beacon of progress for Saudi Arabia's burgeoning film industry. With a staggering 1,444 films in participation, over 2,000 unexecuted screenplays submitted, and the launch of 289 production market projects, the festival has played a pivotal role in propelling the industry's growth. To celebrate this rich history, the Festival Museum will showcase memorabilia and milestones from past editions. Attendees will have the opportunity to delve into the "Saudi Encyclopedia of Cinema," comprising 20 volumes chronicling all facets of the film industry, and participate in engaging book signing events. Additionally, a dynamic children's program will offer interactive experiences, meet-and-greets with Saudi film stars, and tours of Ithra's state-of-the-art facilities.

  • Honouring Cinematic Pioneers:

Continuing its tradition of paying homage to cinematic trailblazers, the SFF will bestow accolades upon distinguished Saudi artist Abdul Mohsen Al-Nimr for his invaluable contributions to Gulf cinema. Al-Nimr's acclaimed works, including "The Sun" (1990), "Shadows of Silence" (2006), "Thobe The Wedding" (2016), "Long Road" (2022), and "Hajjan" (2023), have left an indelible mark on the industry. His recent successes at prestigious film festivals, including the Toronto International Film Festival and the Gulf Film Festival, further underscore his enduring impact on the cinematic landscape.
